The Eaton Fire, now fully contained after burning over 14000 acres, has destroyed many homes and businesses throughout Altadena, Pasadena, and Sierra Madre. Also lost in the fire are many beloved hiking trails and recreation spots in the Angeles National Forest and Los Angeles County.

Last year I wrote a post about grieving through the anticipation of death and loss. This year, on what would have been my dad’s seventy-third birthday, I am finishing up plans for a socially distanced compliant church memorial service. Our grief journey has been a long road to loss.
The long road to loss, while allowing time to prepare for the difficulty to come, can be fraught with its own pain and difficulty. This post is a reflection on a few of the things I've learned in this season of anticipatory grief.
