Trail Snacks: Energy Balls

When considering trail snacks, we typically look for high calorie, high protein foods, such as those made with nuts and whole grains, or meat jerky. This is in addition to easily portable fruit- bananas and oranges are a favorite- and gummy bears or Trader Joes’ Scandinavian Swimmers, their version of Swedish Fish. Lately I’ve been making a version of no-bake energy balls. These contain nut butter for protein, oats and shelled hemp seeds for fiber, and agave and chocolate chips for sweetness. The kids were skeptical the first time I made them, as the mix looks rather odd, but they have since become fans.  And with the quick energy ingredients, these tag along well on day hikes.

Energy Balls

1 cup rolled or steel cut oats
1/3 cup hemp hearts
1/2 cup nut butter (I prefer almond, but any nut butter will work)
1/2 cup agave syrup
1/3 cup milk or semi-sweet chocolate chips
1/2 tsp sea salt
1 tsp vanilla
sprinkle of cinnamon to taste

Mix all ingredients in a large mixing bowl. Using a small ice cream scoop, shape into 1-inch balls. Place on a piece of parchment or wax paper on a plate and freeze for 15 minutes to an hour. Can be prepared a few days in advance.

These are a great before or after hike treat. Happy trails!
