Good Times and Sunny Climes at the Beach

It’s Labor Day today, and we’re finishing up what was a busy three-day weekend.  Thankfully, today has a bit of a slower pace.  The husband is back at work since we didn’t make any big plans for the holiday, so it’s just the kids and me. So to keep cool and keep the kids from getting too stir-crazy, we will join the throngs of people headed to the beach, then head home for the annual family barbecue.

We live only about 30 minutes from the beach, but we tend not to go as often as the travel brochures would suggest is the habit of those living in So Cal. Traffic along with busy schedules tend to be limiting factors in the frequency of our beach trips. So when we do go, we try to make the most of the day.  Our favorite beach hangouts include:

Manhattan Beach- Los Angeles County– one of the cities that make up the South Bay. The beach is clean, and there are plenty of shops and restaurants to spend time (and money!) after the kids get cold from swimming.

Bolsa Chica State Beach- Orange County– I really like Bolsa Chica. The beach is kept pretty clean, and there are firepits available on a first-come, first-serve basis.  Parking is $15 cash or credit/debit; parking has not been a problem for us. The lifeguard towers are in view from the lot, making it easy to meet up. There isn’t much around besides the beach and ecological preserve but it’s great for all-day beach hangouts with friends.

Laguna Beach- Orange County– This All-American Orange County town offers plenty to do and much coastline. I will always remember hanging out on the beach taking photos on my dad’s old Minolta and going for ice cream after a marching band competition in high school. Years later, we’ve created good memories with the kids. There are plenty of shops and art galleries for those who enjoy that. The boys get bored with shops, but there are still great places to get ice cream. Laguna’s beaches are clean with soft sand- perfect for a fun day out. And Instagram photos.

Santa Monica and Venice Beach are fairly close to us.  While we do take out of state friends and family to visit these beaches for their fame, we tend not to frequent these, especially Venice Beach, on our own.  Parking is difficult, Santa Monica tends to be very busy, and Venice lives up to its reputation of being weird.

Hope you have a great day, wherever this Labor Day takes you. Happy trails!
